Need help deciding on what batteries to use.?

Ok I’ve got two motors off an electric wheel chair. I’m planning on building a segway type thing with them. I already mocked it up with wood till I can weld the metal parts together. Ok so the original controller board has two 12V sockets on it so I barrowed two 12v 18AH sealed lead acid batteries from the robotics room. Turned it on and it works beautifully. But now iv got to get some batteries of my own. To get the same ones it would cost me $53 a piece (unless you know where I could get a supper deal). But I saw some that were 12v 5AH and were $10 a piece (lot cheaper) so could I use these and just not get as much battery life or are they not as strong. Maybe I can take four and put them in two sets to make an array at 12v 10AH. Maybe it doesn’t work that way. Any advice or comments please contact me justin-hulbert@hotmail.com

It sucks I know a ton about circuits and can’t even figure out this simple problem, got any charts or equations on the matter, thanks!!

I would check for 10 or 12 AH batteries. I have seen them also for the $10 - $15 price range. I would start with less costly batteries, whichever you chose, while developing your machine. If the machine tests OK compared to what it did with the bigger ones, you are fine until you have the machine up and running. Once it is ready for long duration testing, add more capacity to get it to run longer. The smaller batteries will have shorter life and produce less torque as well. However, you can parallel them exactly as you said. Only issue is you need to separate them electrically once in a while and test them to verify each one is working OK.

Segways aren't all that complicated.
